A Regular Guy’s Guide to Shampooing

● June 2019

For most guys, the morning shower feels less like a luxurious Indian head massage, and more like a budget car wash in a thunderstorm.

We sling whatever supermarket splodge looks most familiar into our shopping baskets, and proceed to throw our domes into the white water rapids to get the bulk of it out. When the bottle runs low, we toss another bottle in the basket. Rinse and repeat.

For most guys, the morning shower feels less like a luxurious Indian head massage, and more like a budget car wash in a thunderstorm.

This chaotic autopilot routine is doing nothing to nourish our hair. When it comes to keeping hair thick and healthy, getting the basics sorted makes a big difference.

How to Shampoo Effectively

Our Power Shampoo is built to be applied every day whatever your hair goals. Oily, dry, thin, tangled? We are hair for you.

Ingredients like caffeine in our Power Shampoo will help stimulate follicles, encouraging blood flow to promote hair growth.

Evidence shows that the health of your scalp impacts the health of your hair, so don’t be shy: get right in there towards the skin. Wet your hair, then step outside the water jets and massage the shampoo in gently, working it in right up close to the scalp. Ingredients like caffeine in our Power Shampoo will help stimulate follicles, encouraging blood flow to promote hair growth.

Once that’s finished, it’s time to take the tempo down a little. Rinse every last bit of product out of your hair or you’ll run the risk of it drying out and becoming flaky.

Ingredients to Look For

Shampoo is made using a surfactant, a compound which cleans the hair by trapping oil and dirt and allowing water to wash them away. Not all surfactants were created equal, so it’s worth checking out which is being used.

In our Power Shampoo we use Coco-Glucoside, which is derived from coconut and fruit sugars, and Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate because it’s gentler on the skin than some alternatives. Cocamidopropyl Betaine is an excellent co-surfactant too – a kind of chemical sidekick which helps boost the properties of the surfactant. It’s palm-oil free, unlike some alternatives.

If you’ve got normal to dry hair, you’ll also want to look out for moisturising ingredients like glycerin, which we use in our Power Shampoo. It helps hair retain moisture and gives it a thicker and smoother sheen. Hydrolyzed wheat protein or saw palmetto will do the job of helping strengthen hair, while Biotin can help with the production of keratin, the building blocks of a healthy head of hair.

Ingredients to Avoid

Try and steer clear of sulphates such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). In their mission to remove oil from your hair, these compounds can end up drying it out. They’re also derived from palm oil, which has a negative environmental footprint and is linked to the displacement of indigineous peoples. No thanks.

Parabens are generally best avoided too. These preservatives have been found to enter the body through the skin and remain in the tissue. They’re not great for the environment, either, and have even been found in the bodies of marine life such as dolphins.
