How To Use Wegovy

Wegovy is a once-weekly injection and can be taken at any time of the day, with or without food. Choose a spot on your stomach, thigh, or upper arm that feels comfortable to inject into. Pick a different place to inject each week to minimise discomfort.

1. Check the name and dose of your pen to ensure this is your Wegovy pen.

2. Pull the cap off and check that the Wegovy in the pen is clear and colourless.

3. Attach a new needle. Take a new needle and pull off the paper tab

• Always use a new needle for each injection
• Never use a bent or damaged needle

4. Push the needle straight onto the pen and turn it until it is tight.

5. Pull off both needle caps.

6. If your Wegovy pen is already in use, you can skip Step to 7. If using it for the first time, check the Wegovy flow with each new pen. Turn the dose selector to select the ‘dose check symbol’. Hold the pen with the needle pointing up, then press and hold the dose button until the dose counter returns to ‘0’. The zero must line up with the dose pointer. Make sure a drop appears at the needle tip. If a drop does not appear then change the needle and repeat the step once more. If a drop of Wegovy still does not appear then do not use the pen, and contact Manual (help@manual.co).

7. Select the dose by turning the dose selector to the dose you need to inject (please note each pen has a fixed dose).

8. Inject the dose into the subcutaneous fat in the abdomen, upper leg or upper arm. Do not cover the dose counter as this can stop the injection. Then press and hold the dose button until the dose counter shows ‘0’. The ‘0’ must line up with the dose pointer. Keep the needle in the skin whilst holding the dose button and count to 6.

9. Remove the needle from the skin.

10. Carefully place the outer shield back on the needle, remove it, and discard it in the sharps bin provided. DO NOT store your pen with the needle attached. Dispose of the needle in the yellow sharps bin provided. Always remove the needle from your pen, even if returning to the pharmacy; this prevents contamination, infection, and leakage of Wegovy and blocked needles leading to inaccurate dosing.

11. Put the pen cap back on.

How Much To Inject

If you are new to Wegovy, you will begin with a starting dose of 0.25 mg, which is increased gradually every four weeks, up to a maximum of 1 mg.

If you find a dose is working for you, it’s fine to continue treatment without increasing your dose. The dose is gradually increased to allow your body to get used to the medication and minimise any side effects you might experience.

It’s common to experience some side effects as you’re starting out on treatment. These are usually mild and temporary as your body is getting used to the medication. Common side effects include:

• Loss of appetite
• Nausea

  • Wegovy can increase the risk of gallbladder problems and pancreatitis. Symptoms include severe, sharp upper stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever. Stop treatment and get medical help right away if these occur.

• Diarrhoea or constipation
• Burping and flatulence
• Hair loss
• Local reactions at the injection site such as irritation, itching or bruising

Managing Low Blood Sugar Levels

While Wegovy is designed to help you manage your weight, it may cause low blood sugar levels, especially if you are also using diabetes medication. Be aware of symptoms like dizziness, shaking, or hunger, and have a quick source of sugar available if needed. On rare occasions, these symptoms can occur, even if you’re not diabetic.

Dehydration Warning

Vomiting and loose stools can lead to dehydration. If you experience frequent vomiting or diarrhoea, increase your fluid intake, and consider an oral rehydration solution. If symptoms persist, contact our clinical team for advice.

General Anaesthesia

If you’re preparing for general anaesthesia, there’s an increased risk of aspiration, where food or liquids could enter your airway or lungs during the procedure. To help reduce this risk, it’s essential to stop your Wegovy at least one week prior to surgery. Be sure to notify both your healthcare provider and the anaesthesia team about your treatment so they can take the appropriate steps to ensure your safety.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Wegovy should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and if trying to conceive. It’s recommended that you use suitable contraception while taking this medication. If you are planning to become pregnant, you should stop taking Wegovy at least two months before trying to conceive.

When Not To Use Treatment

Wegovy isn’t recommended if you have heart failure, severe stomach or gut issues, or inflammatory bowel disease, liver or kidney disease, or if you’re aged over 75.

Diabetic Eye Screening

If you have diabetes, regular eye screenings are important during treatment.

Mental Health

If you have mental health concerns, such as depression, stopping treatment may affect your mood – keep an eye on how you feel and reach out to a clinician if needed.

Informing Your GP

Always tell your GP and other healthcare professionals involved in your care that you’re using Wegovy. If you do not share this information with your GP, they will not have correct information to make decisions about your care, increasing your risk of injuries or side effects. On your account page, you can download a letter to share with your GP that contains all the relevant information about your treatment plan.

If you’re having an investigation or are admitted to hospital, we recommend you pause treatment. If you’re due to have surgery with general anaesthesia or deep sedation, stop Wegovy at least a week before the procedure.

Emotional Wellbeing and Eating Behaviours

While on your GLP-1 medication, please let our team know if you notice any new or worsening patterns that feel distressing or obsessive regarding:

Your thoughts/feelings about food, weight, or your body (e.g., intense fear or guilt).

Your eating habits (e.g., becoming much more restrictive, feeling out of control/bingeing, or urges to "undo" eating like being sick or using laxatives.

Exercise becoming driven or compulsive.

When will I see results?

How should I store my pen?

When you first receive your Wegovy, store it in the fridge (2°C to 8°C). After the first dose, it can be kept at room temperature below 30°C. Use within 6 weeks to ensure it is still effective.

• Do not use this medicine if the solution is not clear and colourless or almost colourless.
• Do not freeze.
• Keep your pen needle-free when not in use.
• Dispose of used pens in your sharps box, which you can take to your local pharmacy once full.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If it’s been less than 5 days, take it as soon as you remember. Otherwise, wait until your next scheduled dose.
